Usually when i say this to a girl or vice versa the conversation goes like this.

HB hey whats up.

me nothing much what about you.

HB usually theyll say there bored or nothing really going on either/

and the conversation just just dies off.



whats the best way to escalate the things from here?

Just start with an opener not 'Hi how are you?' its total AFC!

Then just reply with;

"are you honestly going to use that to pick me up? Here, try again" walk away and the pretend to walk past her again.

Neg the crap outa her for the shitty second attempt. then say somthing like "Normally i'd walk away but your lucky ive got a question to ask...[opener]"

this, as an opener is not total AFC - if you neve approached.... then its AFC. Its not the opener, its the follow up after that first line which is most important.

he: hi how are you?
her: good thanks, how are you?

this is your opener which is to engage the target - you have the makings of a conversation (its far from perfect, but, it has achieved what you wanted - interaction...) can go to A2 from here..

"Hi. How are you?" A perfect opener every single time. It's elegant, simple, comes in under the radar and is something she hears a hundred times every day. It's innocuous. The only sticking point with this opener: you have to care. If you ask someone how they are, and you don't care, it's a mindless pleasantry. If you actually give a shit about how they are, you'll notice a change in your tone, a shift in inflection and your body language will change to suit.

I can't stress re-threading enough. Tell a story. Use another opener. DHV. Whatever it is you do when you're in the middle of a set, do it a few times.
