So I was sitting at a coffee place with a friend of mine today. We were chatting about our beliefs on social awareness.

Just then a guy walked into the shop holding nothing but a newspaper. She looked at him and then she turned back to me. "Why do you suppose he brought his newspaper here?" I thought for a moment..."well, I guess it's possible he enjoys the SPAM. "But then I reconsidered that statement. "I bet he's hoping to meet somebody cool"....

"Exactly!" - my friend responded.

That simple statement helped me to make a generalization that I think is very true.

If you ever see a person sitting alone in a public setting, think to yourself "Wouldn't this person love to meet somebody cool?" The answer is unanimously yes.

It's a good thing that you are cool. This is a golden opportunity for you to give them exactly what they want. You're going to introduce them to a very cool person. It's You.

The next time you're thinking about approaching anybody (with 3 second rule in mind) try framing the situation as I have above. It's both empowering and logical.

Goodluck

Bringing a newspaper into a coffee shop is a great way to open up a single
set or multiple set...

You can just go up to them (if they have a paper) and ask them what they
thought of (article)...

The newspaper is in essence, a great coffee shop pick up prop.

Then again, there are people out there that like the coffee in said shop, and
also like the SPAM in said shop. And they do in fact just go there to
read the paper. They also might be meeting someone there.

Maybe this guy was not looking to meet someone cool, maybe he
just wanted to get out of the house, or he didn't want to sit on a park bench
and read his paper.

Why were you and this friend in a coffee shop? Were you two out wanting
to meet "cool" people? Or where you there because you like the coffee and
the SPAM?

You two could have met at one of your homes, or the park, or some other
place... but of all the locations, you two chose a coffee shop so you could
judge the reason why others were there...

Good question. She and I also discussed this. If you read above you'll see that my framing technique is referring only to when you see anybody sitting alone.

Of course it's possible they want to get out of the house, but for the most part they probably want to be around people and would be open and happy to meet somebody cool.
