Am I the only one who doesn't give a shit? I generally don't post about anything like guns, murder, rape, drugs or any of that stuff. A spelling mistake isn't exactly a huge deal but I don't usually post any of those either.

I don't like this whole "lie about who you are, to impress other people" age that we live in. I don't want to work for the kind of person who would be offended by what I post, to the point that it'd sway their decision. Maybe it's me being childish, but I'm sticking by it lol.

Yeah, it's kind of fucked up. I read an article that predicted it might eventually get to a point where no social media presence would mean no chance for employment, and then people would end up making ghost Facebooks with a headshot and some random animal pictures just to have something there, and THEN employers would start requiring employees to make x number of social media posts per whatever time period.

eh, i am not completely against it. I have seen posts bashing a former employer and bashing coworkers...so if you're the type of person to air out dirty laundry like that , then hell yeah I wouldn't hire you (if I was the employer).

I generally put whatever I want, but then again I don't really use Facebook to vent my heart out. I post positive things, here and there I post things that I think people should be aware about (bullying for example)...

I keep it real as well.

For me it comes down to, am I free of what others think and say about me? Or am I dependent on other's opinions, social media, etc. Linked in can fuck off.

Future girlfriends may Google you, too. Might as well control what comes up.
You might say that I'm only punishing myself here, but fuck them. If they don't like me for who I am... then fuck them, right? A mixture of self cock blocking and screening, I suppose. Plus, I've had quite a few girls tease me for embarrassing stuff from years ago on my Facebook.

When I say "teasing" I mean laughing at how I used to be (a chav, if you're from the UK): mainly wen i use 2 typ lyk this n i sounded rly stupid but i fort it was kl lol. < yea, I know.

Ever heard the saying "a picture says a thousand words"???

Unfortunately, you can't control what pictures you're painting in peoples heads. People are going to think whatever they are going to think and develop perceptions of you.

I'm really one to not care whether or not people judge me on Facebook... but I really don't want other people all up in my business either. I don't have time to brag to Facebook about what I'm doing every 15 minutes.

Just want to throw this out there... As many of the users here are young and have not yet entered their careers.

Having a 'fuck the world' attitude with your social media is fine if you're heading into a field like construction, manual labor, plumbing, and probably 50 other things I can't even think of...

But as soon as you try to get a job in the IT world, clean up your act.

I am one of the older members here (I'm nearly 37) - I hire and fire people regularly and run a very large department for a very large company here in Toronto.

I can tell you social media is the very first thing we check on potential candidates for interviews. If we get a whiff of something we don't like - sorry, you won't be getting an interview.

Something as simple as toggling your privacy settings so the entire world can't see your drunken photos can help prevent people like me from skimming your profile or twitter feed and seeing stuff I shouldn't be seeing.

Just flagging it for people with a cavalier attitude towards the seriousness of this stuff (which appears to be how this thread started), who may not have considered that it's now a regular part of recruiting (at least in the digital/IT world) and at media companies.

I've heard that social media has replaced almost all of the tools the FBI and the CIA use to find out intel on someone lol I check people out before I take them on as clients...

I think it's quite sad that sites like Facebook even get checked, to be honest. But then again, me thinking it's sad won't stop it from happening.

Is it though?

Social media can honestly tell you a shitload about who a person is and can give you a general perspective on their values.

Most employers won't deny you a job because you have a few pics of you drunk on your wall. They will deny you a job however, if you share and support anti-semitism, xenophobia, racism or whatever other fucked up extremist ideologies.

I don't think people understand what's being meant by "checking social media".

I don't have a problem with this. However, I post (and strongly agree with) a lot of anti-religion stuff. Primarily Islam (this came out wrong, I don't hate the religion as a whole). I'd never sell out for the chance to earn money for somebody in a factory lol.

Correct. Can't really blame them....Companies have hundreds of applicant going after a position. It costs money to recruit, hire, train and fire and repeat the process if something goes wrong. Why shouldnt they check all avenues to make sure you should work there? If you have anti religious views that could possibly be an issue in the workplace, why should they give you a chance, when there are 100 other applicants with your qualifications without those views? If you had 1000 girls trying to be your gf and there was only 1 spot, you'd screen them hard as well and disqualify just the same.

So check things like criminal record and things that actually matter. Most things that people post online, are a reflection of their opinion. Everybody was entitled to one of those, until "employers" took away our freedom of speech and we had to be careful what we say incase some rich bastard wont let us line his pockets. If I wanted a job and was denied the chance because I don't have an imaginary friend in the sky, then I wouldn't want to work for that place anyway. Just because I'm not religious, doesn't mean I'll be a dick to anybody who is. I wouldn't deny a muslim a position at my company because of his religious views. It's not going to be fixed just because I moan about it, but I feel like I'm the only one who can see the problems. There are even fucking adverts (commercials) on tv about this shit now. Telling people to pretend to be professional online. I'll act however I want to act outside of work. If they pay me my hourly rate for the time that I'm in and out of work, then I'll happily act professional for 24 hours of pay per day.

You're missing the pt jd. It's not that they are denying you a job.. They are screening. If you were the only applicant sure they may not care that much. But when you're one resume out of hundreds they have to actively disqualify for anything that could potentially be a problem. The employer doesn't have time to talk to you and figure out what kind of anti religious person you are. They don't have time to go through all your posts and discern whether you are a respectful anti religious person or not.

Well my Facebook is private either way and I'm not looking for a job so I suppose it's fine. Still annoys me though.
