| Post subject: | Edge - Improve Your Surroundings, Improve Your Mood |
I wanted to post something that I've had success with. This is in the realm of self-improvement across the board, but certainly does have an impact on my results in my dating life as well. The topic is how I've found my environment can positively or negatively affect me, beyond what I originally thought. To illustrate my point: If someone is talking in your native language, you can’t not understand them. You can’t not interpret the words they’re saying. Once you understand the language, your brain automatically will decode and interpret it - you do not have a choice or an on/off switch. But that’s just language. When you see a picture of something, you can’t not interpret what it is a picture of… if you see a picture of a human face, you will recognize it as such. It is automatic. Let’s take this further. If you are listening to music that evokes a certain emotion or that speaks to a certain mindset, you can’t not be affected on some level. It will have SOME degree of an effect. Same with shows you watch, books you read, websites you visit, radio shows you listen to, etc. Everything you allow into your environment will have some degree of influence on you because our brains are designed to automatically interpret and process input. Now I am NOT a victim-thinker. I do not think that we are powerless to the environment or that we can’t overcome harmful environmental conditions. What I am saying is that we need to acknowledge that the environment and what we allow in our environment DOES have a cumulative impact on us. I do many things to make sure that my “input” is helping me along to get where I want to go: I watch very little TV. I stopped listening to angry and/or depressing music (I used to love it). I stopped reading and/or listening to angry people (even if they were funny to read or listen to). I make an active effort to think about how living in the life I want feels (experiencing the feeling of “having” my desired life.) I visualize the life I want. I take care of things that have to get done quickly, so they don’t pile up and bring my mood down. I keep my living space clean and inspiring (as best I can.) I pat myself on the back when I succeed and I do not beat myself up when I mess up. I make an effort to notice the good things in my life and be grateful for them. When I started making an effort to clean up my environment and what ideas/vibes I was around, my life improved. These days I feel much better than I used to - I am way more productive and I am much happier. |

Good Stuff, dude. It's true that you unconsciously react, in varying degree, to all external stimuli. It is even the theory that all information is stored eternally internally. Most of the emotional states get anchored to these objects too, so you may find that even after making all sorts of changes, sitting down in the chair you used to crash into when you came home from work, really down, brings back the old emotional states. But then again, Major Mark had a nice approach to this, Literally burn the chair, or as he did, the suits he used to wear when he worked at a cubicle job he Hated. Make a complete change, and be decisive about the change, really make a promise to yourself to not revert to the "old" states. Love the list, man. It seems you have created a very clean and attractive relationship to the world. It is the philosophy of the Hunas, according to In10se, that "You get what you focus on". So focusing on a life where you really love the way you live it is most likely to get you there. (This is btw also what Crowley talked about when he coined the phrase "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law." Find out what you really want in life, your innermost desire, and do it.) Cheers, |

This is great for when you have control over your environment (i.e. your room, car, etc) As an add-on to what you said, I think when you are in an environment you can't control, it is important to be very aware of your surroundings and move if necessary. For example, if you are sitting in a coffee shop and the people next to you are complaining about their jobs, weather, etc it might be worth it to just move away from them. Have you ever noticed that when you are in an extremely good mood, you begin to "pick-up" (pun intended) the mood of everyone around you? |

I've found the hard part isn't making yourself feel good when you want to, it's making yourself feel good, even when you don't want to. But one very simple thing I've found that works wonders, just sit/stand a straighter for a while. For some reason, when I do this, my negative emotions and thoughts tend not to bother me as much and I start feeling a little better, faster. |

Yes, I agree with you.Have you ever noticed that when you are in an extremely good mood, you begin to "pick-up" (pun intended) the mood of everyone around you? I mean, the other side of this is that when negativity is around you, you cope with it. I'm not encouraging the idea that we bury our heads in the sand and avoid negativity at all costs, lest we should endure something that doesn't feel good... I'm just saying that I think that there's enough around us that could bring us down (in one way or another) so that we might as well do what we can to bring up our baseline level of happiness. |

Awesome. I love that. I think that stuff has a much bigger impact on the subconscious than I originally did years ago. Years ago I would have felt this was just a silly performance, but symbols have a powerful effect. Thanks!Love the list, man. Quote: It seems you have created a very clean and attractive relationship to the world.
I agree with you. I would also say that the other half of the equation for me is continually dealing with anything negative when it comes up. I'm definitely not advocating the idea of avoiding negativity at all costs... I'm just saying that I no longer want to invite it into my life or indulge in it. And so far, I have cleaned it up and enjoyed great benefits from doing so.

Did you just write a summary of "The Secret" or did you actually come up with this on your own?

I have definitely watched the Secret, but that's not really what I was going for here. The Secret is about the law of attraction. What I'm talking about here is the effect that our environment has on our mindset, our thoughts and our moods.Even still, the idea in both my post and the ideas in the Secret have been around for thousands of years. I'm not claiming that I "came up with them" - I'm only sharing that in my personal experience I've had success doing these things. |
