| Post subject: | Working on posture 101 |
Hello, I won't bother to explain why people need to work on posture. Many gurus have already mentioned it. Why am i writing this? Theres really no point in keeping it to myself and watching the general population's epic fail. I've done yoga for several years now, and I consider myself pretty competent in it. And I know that a few of you have to work a bit on posture, either because you've said it explicitly or simply because of probabilities. Now, there's a few tips and tricks there and there to help out the laymen with a quick fix, but nothing very sustainable though. So Ill try to explain it easily and give sustainable habits to help you out. First some theory. Our body is very plastic. Hold one thing long enough, and your body will restructure itself to maintain a sustainable effort. Outside of other external forces, the major one that affects us is gravity. Gravity wants to take us down, and our body structure or posture determines how long of an effort it can manage to stay up. Standing may not feel like you're doing much, but the body is burning energy to maintain it erect and counter gravity. The point of posture work is to give the least energy to maintain a standing position. If you maintain your energy reserve, well you can use that excess energy to do other stuff or for your body to use for self maintenance activity. In the end posture work is very much like ballet, and ballet dancers are very pretty. Yes, even the guys, for you closet homophobes. --It starts with your feet.-- This is essentially THE most important thing about posture. If you force yourself to straighten your neck, and disregard your feet. Eventually your body will revert to its original position. Why? Because it is where your body meets the ground. Its the base of the structure. Imagine stacking pennies, and the bottoms ones are not even stacked well. So how am I supposed to base my feet of the ground. That one is easy. All the hottest girls seem to be even more hotter when they sport high heels. And guys seem even more prouder and dignified when doing a sporting activity. Whats the common thing about their posture? They base their weight off the balls of their feet. There is a reason why traditional Chinese medicine and yoga seem to place so much importance on feet. Even modern studies correlate how a foot is linked with nerves in the upper body. Working at the feet level is the ultimate of striking flocks of birds with one stone. When you stand on the ball of the feet, you have to straighten yourself up, and even my sister in law was frank in saying she wore high heels because it made her butt look more pretty. For the non sporting type, it might seem odd that athletes base their weight on the balls of their feet. But if you ever boxed or wrestled, you'd know that it increases mobility and equilibrium. On a more scientific level, you could say the arch of the feet creates a spring like effect on the body, making you as light as a gazelle. Okay, so we're not about to cheat and wear high heels to make ourselves look more dignified. So the only thing left to do is to flex it. To use it as actively as you would your hands. You might say, i'm walking hence i'm using my feet. No! The general population is a bunch of flat footed zombies. Their trail on snow leaves not footprints but a ski trail. It might seem odd to say, but if you ever stumbled on a foot fetish video ( dont ask. I was looking for decent porn, but hell im open minded enough) The toes themselves look like mini feet, where you can actually notice an arch. Now, you might wonder why so much overkill on details. Well first of all, im not a girl, so i cant tell you why they do it, but from a fighting point of view, losing your base might result in injury. Ever had a knee torqued from wrestling? It sucks. Anyways, thats about it for one part. Hope it helps someone. |
