Post subject:  Ask a French guy anything about men's fashion

Hi guys.

I live in Paris, and work in one of the largest fashion stores of the city as a trend and product line advisor.

To sum up, my job is to choose what come up to your shelves for the next year, and I think I'm knowledgeable about pretty much anything regarding style or fashion.

Beware, I work in a high-end store, and the clothes we sell are definately more on the "Trendy/classy parisian" side than the Ed hardy douche one, so don't expect me to talk about Affliction, Gap, A&F or any american brand here.

So yeah, questions? Brands, cuts, colors, trends in Paris, french girls, go on.

Some restaurants serves them, and they're damn good. It's all in the sauce.

That was a good answer. I trust you now.

What kind of shoes should I wear with jeans? I want black dress leather shoes, but it seems to look strange because I don't like to wear skinny jeans, I wear relaxed fit jeans (not baggy)

You should stop wearing those jeans. A jean should always be worn at least in a semi-slim way. 20.5cm at the bottom, maximum. It doesn't look classy if it's not fit. Same goes for the shirts/tshirts/whatever.

I wear my jeans with brown richelieu. Right now, I'm with a pair of Paul Smith.

Designer clothes fit well people up to 1.95m. Is it tall enough?
I'm not expert on this subject.

That would be a bit too short. I am little over 2 meters tall.

I liked your answer for the shoes with jeans. My style right now is kinda rockstar/military. I wear skinny jeans, dressier shirts with designs most of the time, a flashy watch, 1 ring, pair of flashy aviators and converse monochrome shoes. I'm wondering if a better choice of shoes would be dressier ones like you posted above or maybe a pair of boots? Any advice on my style would be great. Oh and I gel my hair up in the front because I have an oval shaped face and I found that looks the best. Thanks in advance!

The only rule is to be consistent. If you wear a majority non-formal wear, never try to add formal touches in it (the reverse is not true). It will just look ridiculous. In your case, dressy shoes like mine will add nothing to your character, they will just seem...misplaced.
A nice pair of combat boots seems to make sense for you : they're highly fashionable right now, so you won't have any problems finding a good pair.

Those are N.D.C. ones :

Awesome suggestion, never thought about combat boots. Any suggestions on sites I can look at nice ones that don't cost a ton of money? Economy sucks haha ;)

I usually get free stuff at my work, so i don't have to bother much about prices, but my less lucky friends do well with Zara or Asos.

Hi

Thanks offering to give your advice.

I'm aiming to look smart, respectable but not too smart if that makes sense? Styles, colours, shoe types? I've not got a clue about any of it.

Thank you!

TBH, your outfit neither come off as fashionable or sophisticated to be noticed.

I personally don't like polo shirts, they usually are worn by guys who "try hard" to look classy. Better buy a v-neck for casual look, or a real shirt for looking smart.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. Here is a shot from Bill Tornade SS 2010.

Everything is fit. Nothing is hanging like your polo does, his jeans are fit, and his shoulders are emphasized by the fitting of the blazer.

Given you stature, you can easily pull off the "Casual Blazer" look, without looking to try hard. Just remember to buy a short one, it should go MAXIMUM down to the middle of your butt.

Hey, I forgot, always wear a belt with jeans.

Last, try to look after a raw jean (the texture, not the brand), like Dior Homme, APC or Edwin. Very washed jeans like yours look neglected, in my sense, unless a lot of work has been made in the wash.
