| Post subject: | Fashion Advice for College Student |
Hey guys, I'm a 20 year old student, and if you have the time I could use some fashion advice. My normal look: http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/5930 ... 654795.jpg I'd like to learn how to dress more formally, and whether I look too ridiculous wearing power metal band shirts. Here's a couple more pics: Office wear: http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1407 ... 658192.jpg More neutral: http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/6814 ... 654927.jpg I can't shave the goatee because my play director wants me looking villainous. My budget is up to $300. Thanks in advance! |

Ok - I recently posted some general pointers (4 main 'things to do' to improve your style) on a thread asking a similar question to this. Check it out wardrobe-revamp-vt139321.html?highlight= It's the second post on that thread, first one from me. As for you personally, I won't go into it in any great detail as I haven't really got the time at the moment, and if you follow the post above you should be well on your way. However, some quick pointers; I can't really say for certain what colour your eyes and hair are from those photos. Your hair looks like it's that sort of dark blonde/light brown 'mousey' colour, and your eyes look like they may be blue (but the picture isn't clear enough for me to tell) for definite. You've got quite a pale but peachy skin tone - you're not that sort of really pale white, nor are you particularly tanned. Going from this (and bear in mind this will need changing if your eyes and hair aren't the colours I think they are from the photo), you want to go for earthy colours in your clothes - browns, 'ochre' reds, greys, greens. And within these colours make sure not to go too neon vibrant with them. They want to be earthy - not necessarily dark, you can still wear bright colour, but make sure they're not that sort of almost flourescent colouring. One point on size - the photo of you in the black t-shirt with the graphic, and the black hat - the t-shirt fits quite well. It may be slightly on the small side if anything, but other than getting clothes altered (which often isn't actually that expensive but can be a lot of effort, and I'm extremely lazy!), you won't get them perfect - and that t-shirt fits you well enough to not really need any altering. The grey t-shirt also fits well. The last photo (bluey/black t-shirt, red hat photo), the t-shirt is too baggy. Especially as it's a round neck. V-necks can often get away with being a bit baggier (especially if you're going for a slightly indie/hippy look), however round necks need to fit very well. Get that down a size or two. I don't know what all your metal band t-shirts look like, but if they are similar to the nice fitting black shirt in your first photo, then they're fine in my opinion. Not overly formal, but if they fit well, they are fine for casual attire. I think it's important not to dress like a clone. You need your clothes to reflect your personality as well as make you look good, especially in casual wear. In casual wear you (probably) haven't got things like work dress codes, or 'social dress codes' where you need to wear a specific outfit like a suit or shirt and tie or whatever. So if you're into metal bands, then go for it! Now, I'm not a fan of baseball caps I've got to say. I'm not really a fan of hats at all. I may just be bullied into wearing some sort of straw hat at a music festival in the summer or something like that, but I don't like them on me. So maybe I'm not the best person to ask about them, but from an entirely personal viewpoint, I'd ditch them. Especially if you're trying to dress more formal. Of course, as I said above, you don't need to necessarily listen to me, and you don't need to dress like a clone, but for me I wouldn't wear them. Ok - quick tips now, as I'm rambling again. Jeans - if you want a more formal look without looking too dressy, then upgrade your light jeans to darker ones. Maybe get a pair of darkish blue chinos - I've recently bought a pair with brown stitching and trim, and they go so well with a pair of brown canvas shoes, I haven't stopped wearing them. Especially for the way you dress, this is something that won't change your style too much, but will look better, trust me. I like the cream chinos though. And shoes need some work. I can't really tell what the ones with your chinos are. But the trainers you're wearing with the jeans are far too "sports shoe". I currently wear a pair of brown desert boots quite regularly, but I think with your style, you'd do well getting a pair of brown converse type canvas trainers. Maybe a boat shoe type shoe as well. If you stick with the lighter jeans, or if you just want some shoes to go with them as well as the darker pair, then I'd advise a pair of converse or something similar. Women notice your shoes, and as I say in the linked post above - an average outfit can look poor if the shoes aren't good, whereas an average outfit can look good with a nice pair of footwear. It really can make or break the whole outfit. I mean, that first photo of you with the nice fitting shirt I was talking about, if you swapped those trainers for a pair of black converse (or cheap black plimsolls in a converse 'style'), it would actually be a pretty sweet outfit. You could even wear the brown ones with that t-shirt as well, as I think they'd go with the orangey/brown graphic on the front of the shirt. And that is where colour comes into it as well - brown shoes with light blue jeans and a black top would perhaps not go too well. However, if the black top has got a brownish graphic on it, then brown shoes could actually really top the outfit off, as they'll accentuate the graphic on the tee. And that's key with accessories as well. Accessories (so belts, hats, ties, scarves, watches, bracelets, whatever - and shoes as well really) need to be used correctly. Many men over use them. An accessory shouldn't be the main part of the outfit and it shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb. The best accessories are the understated ones that accentuate something about the outfit. For instance, the brown shoes bringing out the orangey-brown graphic in the example above. Or maybe, brown shoes matching a brown belt. Or a purple watch (cheap plastic ones for ten dollars or so) to match the stitching on a particular polo shirt you've got that is a different colour, but has the purple stitching and so really adds a whole new dimension to the outfit. And one very final point, a lot of style and clothes is trying things out. I can say try a light green shirt, dark blue jeans and brown trainers with a brown belt. However, if you go out and buy brown trainers that are a shade darker or lighter than the ones I'm thinking of, or a green shirt that is darker/lighter etc. it might not all go well together. So you need to try it on - and a point I make in the other thread, shop in outfits. If you're trying on a new t-shirt, it would be a good idea to be wearing the pair of jeans and trainers that you're most likely to wear with that outfit if you can (or get a similar pair from the store and try those on as well, even if you have no intention of buying them - it's important to look at the outfit as a whole in the mirror). Same goes for getting dressed in the morning. Sometimes I get a tshirt out and think they'll go well with a certain pair of my jeans, then I'll check it in the mirror and the shades might not quite go, or there might be a bit of stitching/trim that I hadn't noticed but clashes with the accessories i've put on and looks horrible, so I go and get changed. Hope that helps, I know some of the advice is fairly general, but I hope I've given you some more personalised specifics about the outfits you've put up here, and if you want anything more let me know. Oh, and as an edited ps, I thought the goatee looked quiet natural on you to be honest - didn't think there was much wrong with it at all! |

A nice fitted button up that's short enough to wear untucked goes a long way. I usually roll my sleeves partway up because long sleeves piss me off. Pair it with a good fitting pair of dark colored jeans and nice shoes (7000 had good advice on those. Personally, I prefer nice square-toe dress shoes) and you're set for most circumstances. |

try a more fitted tee. it looks a million times better, especially when you go out. Plaid buttoned up long sleeves always work. Keep the style simple, but make sure it fits properly. The fit is always more important than the style. |
