Post subject:  Has anyone had to battle alcoholism?

Right now I have a lot of pressure and stress in my life and I am trying to avoid the liquor. But things are building up and getting stronger. I am becoming very tempted to drink away my problems, and help ease my self. I can't afford medicine or relaxants, so I figured alcohol could do the same. Has anyone else had similar problems?

Alchohol is also the main reason of many diseases specially related to lungs and liver.

I have seen many people who have damaged their liver with alchohol.

i have been in your boat man....i wasn't exactly an "alcoholic" but self-medicated myself with copious amounts of beer, liquor, and especially LOTS of text removed by moderator for violation of forum rule #3 (no joke i was going through an ounce every 2 weeks)

you just have to stay busy man. i walked onto my D2 college football team - practice 5 times a week plus a whole new circle of friends (to complement not replace my former)

talk to people about whats bothering you. i know we're guys, we bury our shit down deep but it helps to get it out. you dont have to spread the word, just getting it off your chest to one person, whoever it is, helps.

i don't know where the pressure is coming from...school, relationships, work, financial stuff whatever and obviously i don't know you so sorry i can't be more specific. feel free to PM me if you need someone to talk to

I'm trying to figure out how to do that myself, actually. Although I know I might have to turn it up a notch. I used to have a nasty text removed by moderator for violation of forum rule #3 habit, so I know where you're coming from. I know I'm going to smoke text removed by moderator for violation of forum rule #3 until the day I die -- which I really don't mind -- but I want to try to stay off the booze and cigs for at least a while.

Best thing you can do is treat it like it's oneitis. Erase it from your life and do things that counteract it like diet changes, exercise, personal reflection, etc. That's what I did. Oh, and three days of city-provided detox helped, but that might not be your jive.

What you're talking about doesn't sound like alcoholism, but you definitely are considering self-medication and it's good that you're already concerned for yourself at this stage.

I'm certainly no pro at this sort of thing, but I know there are healthier alternatives to using alcohol to de-stress. Both meditation and physical exercise are great for your mind and body, respectively, and they make you feel good while de-stressing.

If you want to consider meditation, I recommend Zazen meditation (google it!). Join a gym if you haven't already.

And, above all else, don't rely on escapism... running away from your challenges in life... do whatever you can to resolve your issues while keeping in mind that everything's going to work out in the end if you work at it. Also, know that whatever happens, it's really not gonna be that bad.
