| Post subject: | Special Forces training? And running longer than 30 minutes? |
I'm 17 but want to join the special forces in a few years. Anyone here who has been in the army and have some training tips for me? I also have a problem with running. I usually run 3 km which takes me around 15 minutes. I always try to max out and run 3 km as fast as I can. But if I run any longer than 20 minutes and stop due to .. boredom, not because of exhaustion. Any tips how I can run like 1 hour and 30 minutes or any longer? |

PRO TIP: Do not join the army. You are a damn idiot if you do. I speak from experience. I come from a family of soldiers. I was in the Army myself. I keep in contact with numerous friends who were in the army. NOT ONE OF US has not been fucked over in some severe way by the Army or the VA. They simply don't care about you. You are no more than a pawn in chess to them. The amount of money that you make as a soldier is a TINY SUM even simply considering the danger. When you consider the numerous negative aftereffects of military service, especially these days, the picture looks even worse. What is your lower back worth? Your knees? What is post traumatic stress disorder worth? What you do is your choice but do not let a 17 year old make decisions that the 40 year old will have to live with. |

Thx for the advice but I'm not doing it for the money. I just want to do something not every man can do and I'm just doing it for about 2 years, not forever.I speak from experience. I appreciate the concern but I would be thankful if only training tips was posted from now on |

Depends what army. Aussie army is well paid. Agree about the getting fucked over part.I speak from experience. I come from a family of soldiers. I was in the Army myself. I keep in contact with numerous friends who were in the army. NOT ONE OF US has not been fucked over in some severe way by the Army or the VA. They simply don't care about you. Things to do while running - solve the worlds problems - listen to music - reflect upon past decisions and how they've affected you. If you want to join special forces and you lack the motivation to run longer than 30mins, you;re going to struggle big time. SF is all about self motivation and persistence . If you're thinking of just doing it for 2 years, then you've already half failed because you've limited yourself. You'll want to be able to do atleast 70 pushups, 20 chin ups, 200 unheld situps and run 3.2KM carrying 15kg of gear in under 18mins. Where abouts are you running? Around a track or do you have a set start and finish point? I also suggest interval training. Sprint 50m, jog 150m, sprint 50m, jog 150 and so on. A 1:3 sprint/jog ratio is what people normally use. I'm sorry to say, but its probably better to wait until you;re late 20's and have some life experience before you attempt SF entry. Most young people dont have the experience or drive to get in, |

First off Coldboy if its the US Mil your talking about, all the Seals ive talked to overseas, all enlisted first, they didnt just join SF. You need to be trained first and then apply. Secondly life isnt COD4, think you can just join the SF for 2 years and get out? Theres a minimum contract, and if you release after 4 years, they still own you for another 4 (Youre owned for 8 years total). The people that make it have long term plans and drive to get in. The fact that you only want 2 years tells me you woulnt even come close to passing SEAR. If you can go to college, do it, youll have a better future. I agree with Spandrel and Tiger6Niner comments As for the only valid question of running Like Tiger said - solve the worlds problems - listen to music (ipods arnt allowed, you can however sing they really help you zone out/switch off) - reflect upon past decisions and how they've affected you. Running is a lot easier if you switch off/zone out/stop thinking, which is why music is so good, the minute you think about your performance the more its going to down and youll hit the wall. I joined only being able to run 15 minutes and not being able to go on. On our first pt platoon run we went an hour, I finished no problem, i zoned out and followed the guy in front of me. |

I don't know how that sort of decision is rational at all. I sat for a while after reading the original post and I tried to remember my own decision-making process and what the fuck I was thinking but I have no goddamn idea. |

- a sense of adventure - a sense of duty - a physical challenge that will push me to my limits and beyond - running away from problems For me, my experience has changed me for the better despite being fucked around a bit. I learnt alot about myself, and that you cant run from problems, but dealing with them is not as hard as i initially thought. My only real disappointment is being taken out of a combat role and off the m249/m240 just before going to Afghanistan. Although the upside is i have plenty of gym time |

First off, not every teen who talks about joining the army is because they think it would be like a video game... there are other reasons too. No, I'm not joining the US army, as my location says, I live in Norway. Here we have a different system. I talked with a recruiter and he told me that I could sign up for a 7 year contract but I could break it at any time. If I break it I won't get the bonus that I would at the end of the 7 years. I was confused by one statement saying I had to enlist before I can join the SF. When I join the SF, don't I enlist? But thanks to the ones posting training tips like I asked, it's really appreciated |

It means you cant do direct entry SF, you have to spend time in the army before you can apply |
