Post subject:  Drinking: Why not ?

I'll just link to an article that lays out the basic premise; Drinking alcohol is not bad for fitness.

http://www.leangains.com/2010/07/truth- ... uscle.html

I'm guessing this will spark a debate, as it does seem controversial, but please, look into the articles he link to, and give it serious consideration before you sprout off the repetitive, though unproven, tales from the fitness-industry.

I know there's a lot of material out there, but this piece also makes great conversation.

again; please don't dismiss just on face value, but read through and click the links, read the articles, or at least the abstracts, and then see if you have arguments still standing against drinking.

Alcohol really isn't really the enemy of fitness.. but it's mostly the greasy fatty foods that we eat while we drink. I didn't have time to read the whole article but the premise of it is true... HOWEVER as a MMA fighter and coach i have seen the effects of alcohol on your workout the day after a crazy night out, it will greatly reduce how much you can do... I personally don't drink but in my experience it isn't gonna affect you to much as long as it is used it in moderation. don't drink the night before you work out though.. (I would also avoid it while training for a athletic event such as a marathon, boxing match, mma fight ext.)

Main problems with alcohol:

1) empty calories. Particularly when cutting you want to be hitting protein, fat, and carb goals from healthy foods while staying within your calorie limitations. Alcohol is not nutritious but it is particularly calorie dense (it is a fuel after all, in fact ethanol is so energy dense it can be used to fuel cars).

2) when you drink a lot you tend to binge on unhealthy, greasy foods. Counterproductive to bodybuilding.

That said, moderate alcohol consumption is not a big deal with bodybuilding so long as you aren't doing it right before working out.

theres a reason its called a ''beer belly'' ...

anyway i dont think the act of drinking has much of an effect on your fitness however, getting drunk alot causes issues with your health. fact.
a bad hang over can ruin an entire day or weekend thats 1-2 days where you feel crap/down and arent training or maintaining a healthy diet. fact.

however i see no reason why you cant have a southern comfort and lemonade or vodka redbull when you're out with mates.
Personally i dont drink much if at all so wether or not it affects you dirty alcoholics i dont much care ;)

keep safe, keep fit.
