| Post subject: | How to Stay on Your Diet Regardless of Your Parents |
My parents are good people, I love them, but in terms of health, their lazy and dumb. My father used to body build back in the day, generally I can ask him questions about how to lift weights, but when it comes to actual dieting, he has an extremely POOR mentality on it which is why I came to the forums instead. I have a great awesome diet now, courtesy of some great members on this forum, and I appreciate their wisdom and advice. But I call on your wisdom and advice again, just this one time please. You see my father told me," You can eat anything you want as long as you exercise." WRONG, that's total bs and I know it. He keeps going to the store, buying cookies, cakes, etc. And my mom does the same damn thing. Love my mom, but she is the poster child for the overweight middle-class black woman. Good jolly person, but she always complains about how tired she is. The point of this whole thing being, how do you stay on the course of your diet, despite your parents making dumb decisions? I see my parents almost getting offended when I count my calories, or when I say no to a piece of cake or pie. They are like upset, and they get in this authoritative voice when I decline junk food. Sometimes I'll have cravings and cave. I primarily want to know how to stave off my cravings and still eat right despite being surrounded by junk. I ask my parents to not buy the food but they just say, "don't eat it if you don't want it." Black speak for mind your own fucking business and leave me alone. So could you guys help out and give some advice. Thanks very much and I thank you all for having the patience for reading this message. Sincerely, Gaius |

Kinda have/had the same problem so would be interested by the answer as well. I moved out now but it's only temporary for 6 months but I definitely ate better, after 2 months so far, I've never bought any junk food and I've lost 30 pounds so far and I didn't starve myself to death, only started running and eating better (I didn't weigh myself until after 2 months so I thought the scale was broken when it said I was 30 pounds lighter...couldn't believe it But it's definitely hard to stay on a diet when your surrounded by junk like cookies and stuff. Having determination is one thing but just don't give me the choice to eat crap cuz I probably will. |

I moved out for eight months and it has definitely helped my diet But I understand the situation - I'm almost astonished by my family's choices. here's the advice that was given to me (now live at home, and follow it with great results) Buy your own groceries and adopt your own space (cupboard, fridge, vegetable crisper). 25$ a week will get you fresh vegetables, lean ground beef, fruit juice, milk, eggs, etc. Having a stock of healthy choices is key. Eat/cook your own meals - it's not hard, complicated, expensive, time consuming at all and is very rewarding. Snacks - Chop up carrots, celery, brocolli, spinach or whatever. Throw it in a container filled with water in the fridge. Seriously, every time I look in the fridge, I grab a handful and go to town. As for the social pressures, I have little advice. I avoid my mother as much as possible, but I assume that's not an option for most people |
