Does anyone have any advice on how to get broader shoulders?

Does anyone have any gym advice on how i can change.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I used to be rather skinny myself. Now I have pretty broad shoulders (and overall good physique). I am curious as to what your age is and what is your physical activity level. The advice that I would give you depends on those two factors.

In the most basic sense, you should do one of two things:
1) start going to the gym on a regular basis focusing more on heavier weights and lower repetition counts. If you are a beginner, you should build-up a routine that you go at least 3 or 4 times a week to the gym. For specific for your shoulders, you should work up to the exercise the MILITARY PRESS. Look it up. I think that that is the best exercise to develop the shoulders.

If you know about the gym, bench press is ideal for chest (everyone knows this), then you have squats for legs, and the MILITARY PRESS is for shoulders. If you consider yourself in-shape, incorporate the MILITARY PRESS into your workout (make sure that you have a spotter so that you can go heavier).

That should do it, believe me!!! Good luck

1 Genetics above all sorry!

If you have some gentic potential

2. steroids

3.Lateral raises on a machine or with ristance tubes (Press wont do it primary muscle being worked is the tricep)

1) I agree that genetics has alot to do with it. Yet it is not the main concern. So many times I have heard stories of individuals who were very skinny but went incessantly to the gym and become big. That is possible outside of generic inhibitions.

2) Steroids is not a viable option, not because of the pussy side-effects that most people warn about, but because you lose most of the gains that you receive from steroids after you stop using them.

3) LMAO!!!! sorry for laughing, but you telling me that lateral raises on a cable machine (even on free weights) will develop broader shoulders than the military press underscores how little you know about working out. The military press is bad ass (hence why it is called "military"), not made for the bitch asses. And they are hard to do (but doing them consistantly and with correct incremental increases will definately be the best exersize for the development the OP wants).

Lorenzo you need to do some more research you don't necessarily lose your gains at all. If anything you lose the water your body holds.

As for bigger shoulders - military press and also hang clean & press will build some mass on those pal.

RVAIS, we've already had a discussion about tricep usage here:
1-vt77041.html?start=0

You failed to give even one shred of evidence the triceps reach failure before the chest in a bench press or the deltoids in the shoulders. Furthermore, you are arguing against standard anatomical knowledge, as sites like exrx.net ALL agree that the major muscle worked in the military press is the deltoid. And lastly, you're even arguing against anecdotal evidence - I personally have never managed to raise the bar above my head (with the deltoids) and then fail in the last few inches where the triceps are primarily engaged, and I doubt anyone on this forum has either.

Please stop spouting this nonsense. I also think that if you're just going to come to a fitness forum and tell people they cannot achieve their goals unless they're genetically gifted or drug-riddled, you'd be better off not posting.

EDIT: I'm also throwing in my support of the military press. I got excellent gains in my shoulders doing nothing but those on a program that had me trying to add 2.5kg to the bar every fourth day. Continually add weight and you'll like the results.

@tooothpick Thanks for correcting someone who clearly does not know about fitness.

I’m glad that you are able to speak from personal experience (as I have done) because this exercise is the best out there for this specific body part (and I have tried so many types before stating this).

Steroid use is not as simple as you make it sound buddy. Too many people have this conception that using them automatically causes gains. I am not saying that you lose everything, but statistically speaking it is likely that he will lose everything.

And you should not go by evidence found in websites that sell steroids because they are biased to propagate the incorrect belief that I have stated. Medical research (and my own doctor) states how steroid gains vs loses are complicated…

Hey thanks for all the resposes!!

I've just joined a gym and got one of the instructors to form a programme for me :D.

Dont think i would ever use steroids though, due to money and from experience i dont like what it does to people.

Asked the gym instructor about all the exercises everyones included, so hopefully will see some gains.

Cheers guys ive got the help i needed from this post.

Good call on wanting to improve shoulders; they really give that thick powerful frame most guys are after, and they even make your upper arms look better. Too many guys neglect training them waaaay too effin much. Anyways, advice:

Do a specialization phase for 3-4 weeks where you train your shoulders hard 3 days a week while lowering volume for other parts to really allow your shoulders to grow. Try something along these lines:

Monday- shoulders heavy
A. Barbell push press 5x5
B. "cheating" bent rear deltoid raises 3x8. Go heavy on these and use a little body english.
C. cheating front raise 3x8. same as the rear delt raise

Tuesday- train legs a little lighter than you would normally train them

Wednesday- Shoulders light
A. Barbell military press 10x10 (use a pretty light weight and 60s rest between sets)
B. Bent over rear delt raises 4x8

Friday- shoulders volume-
A. Dumbell military press 5x8
B1. Front raise 3x10-12
B2. Lateral raise 3x10-12
B3. Cable machine face pull (use rope attachment) 3x10-12

Saturday- Chest and back a little lighter than you normally would.

Do this for 3-4 weeks then go back to a normal program. Also, eat an extra 500-1000 calories on your shoulder days, preferably in the hours after your workouts. Do all that and you'll be well on your way to those cannonball shoulders my man, good luck!
