Post subject:  best martial arts?

hi guys. i want to know what you think the best martial arts are for real life situations. i have been boxing for a few months and its great. ive done tae kwondo before but that is useless unless you are at a very high level.

i was wondering about taking up kick boxing and some sort of grappling based one. any ideas? thanks

This could become a highly argumentative thread!

I do mma and have found that great for health and fitness. But in a street fight people will rake eyes and fish hook your mouth! Really sick stuff.

The best thing I'd recommend for everyone to learn to survive a street fight would simply be running fast for a long period of time!

If you want to stand and fight, probably Krav Maga. But I'd recommend just getting a big ass gun!

I would say boxing would be great, youll learn how to keep someone at a distance and how to not get hit, as a previous poster said people fight DIRTY sometimes. BJJ is great but again if they are fighting dirty I don't think it would be best since it requires you grappling around with them.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great solution for real life situations since the large percent of fights...I believe over 75%...end up on the ground. Krav Maga is also great for self defense. It was developed by the Israeli special forces. My concern with studying Krav Maga is that it's purpose, originally was to teach soldiers how to defend themselves in life/death situations. Most likely the worst you or I will ever see is a basic bar brawl nothing to extreme. Watch the first UFC championships, Jiu Jitsu dominated when there were NO rules in the fights! I've been doing Jiu Jitsu for about a year and love it. Great for fitness and good solid self defense! Boxing...you can skip. It's cool but it's very impractical for real life self defense.

BJJ is good but what do you do if you have to defend yourself from multiple attackers or armed attackers?

In Krav you learn to disarm assaliants with hand grenades! Just about any survivable situation is covered.

The issue with BJJ is, once you're on the floor you're going to be kicked in the head.

Boxing is a critical thing in a bar fight. But having worked around some of the worst bars in the NorthWest of the UK, I'd recommend avoiding as many fights as possible. One of the most dangerous things in the world is someone with a syringe needle! If that just touches your skin, it will rip through, and you'll be joining the AIDs brigade!

Other things to watch out for:

Corkscrews with razorblades on them. One corkscrew can easily hold 3 blades! Doesn't sound too dangerous, until you realise that if you get slashed, the cuts are too close together to be stitched up. Also getting hit on the back with it, you won't feel the blades. All of a sudden your back will become wet and you can't be stitched.

Spare socks! If you want some fun, put a small glass (or a pool ball) into a sock and swing it like a mini mace. You'll be amazed the power you can create! Beware of people with spare socks.

Wine glasses!!! This is a terrifying thing, and the only time I've ever punched a woman! If you hold the base of the wineglass and shatter the tulip top (where you drink from) you're left with a large glass spike! If you get that in the face, it can go straight through your cheek and tongue put together. In the eye could even kill if it goes deep enough. In the neck can easily kill.

I'd stick with being a living coward, than a brave dead man.

Yeah in jail they call them shanks and sock and lock (or soap back when they used bar soap). Not really a form martial art though.

Krav maga practiced till you can do it in your sleep.

RVAIS that's impressive knowledge with sock and lock.

I'm sorry if it sounded like a suggestion of fight style. It was actually meant to be an enforcement of why running, or at least avoiding a fight, is ALWAYS better than standing and fighting!

I'm all for Krav Maga, but be warned it is meant to "Break, Kill, and Destroy." Someone said it was created by the Israelie special forces. That's true. But it is taught to all Israelie Men, Women, and Children with any military links. The idea is that a soldier is just as deadly whether they have a gun or not. Crazy stuff!

The best self-defense martial art as far as time spent and effectiveness are concerned is boxing, period.

I practice judo, but it takes years to be proficient enough with it to be able to use it in self defense situations.

I have wanted to study Krav Maga and I agree on its effectiveness. But just one other point on multiple attackers. I haven't met too many guys that can legitimately handle a few attackers. You'd really have to be well training to handle over 2-3 people. I'm just saying your odds aren't good, if 3 guys are just trying to get you. But for armed attackers Krav Maga is what you gotta study!

Most attacks in this day and age aren't fair fights or legit confrontations surprise attacks or "getting jumped" prison style one look and and you go high I go low get him down and stomp him is the norm.

Two on one situations. Here's a story of fights up North in the UK.

I've seen two guys squaring up at each other and one said "Fine, we'll take this outside." The guy inviting the other outside has a reputation for being a bit of a hood.

As they started walking towards the door, one of the other doormen stopped the guy taking the invite outside and told him to wait 5 minutes then leave out the back door.

I asked my colleague why he did that. He said "There are about 20 guys waiting outside for him, and I'm not dealing with a murder case."

Even if exaggeration was double the truth, that's still 10 guys waiting outside!

In the UK we don't have guns (legally) and any knife with a blade 3 inches or more is illegal.

Up North most guys seem to have little more to do than drink and fight.

Standing and fighting really isn't worth it!!!
