They are tremendous in building overall mass and strength. However i believe squats and normal deadlifts are the best. |

True there is great stress hips, knees and lower back. But why avoid that? When one achieves near perfect form with squats, these stresses are largely decreased and the stress is focused on the muscles where you want it to be. Also, squats are largely beneficial to stabiliser muscles as all free weight exercises are. This means you strengthen the muscles that support the larger muscles used in sports and physical activity. This helps to prevent injury and overall strength in movement. Needless to say, leg presses are extremely beneficial. But you must always incorporate free weight exercises, especially the basic compound movements such as the squat, deadlift, bench press and military press as well as machine-activated movements. Id just like to make a point on powerlifters. HUGE guys. And I doubt any of the readers would want to look like them however. Yes they eat anything and everything they see and have a huge body fat percentage. But their strength is amazing as well as their muscle mass. Watch videos of them squat deadlift and bench, and watch how much weight they put on |

squats are much better for mass gain than deadlifts are. there are plenty of small people pulling decent numbers on deadlifts. I haven't seen anyone in my gym deadlift more than me, and i weigh 158 lbs. but squats? when was the last time you saw a small guy squatting heavy (with good form)? |
