Post subject:  Improve posture?

It was recently brought to my attention that my posture isn't so good, I slump my shoulders and don't stand/sit as tall as I should.
I've tried to consciously hold a better posture but it's so hard to constantly remember when it's so natural to slump. Any ideas on a better way to work on this? I've been working upper back and shoulder more at the gym too.

Everyone judges on bad posture. Pick up just about any literature on body language and one of the most important topics will be posture.

I can understand bad posture but Scoliosis is something that can't be helped without surgery.

ABSOLUTELY they do. I am 6'3 and used to have horrible posture. I also used to never get laid. I worked on it for a long time and now its so much better, i even get compliments on it from girls saying they never see guys that tall with such good posture.

Some tricks: When your in the car driving to work, pull the seat back all the way as if your laying down and theres no way you can possibly lean on it without crashing to your death. It might be uncomfortable and suck, but by the time you get to work or wherever it is your going when, youll feel great and wont have that lazy need to lean on anything. As time goes, youll be able to sit in a chair without leaning and without having to clench your abs and legs like you probably will need to do at first.

doesnt need to be in the car only, can be anywhere just i like the car because you cant cheat and lean back a little unless you move the seat back up unlike most chairs.

DEADLIFTS. just dont fuck yourself up and do them wrong, or do too much weight. proper technique and proper weight is a must.

CORE: anything core will keep you steady.

IMPORTANT! sorry for all the caps but an interesting fact is that people FORGET how to keep their head up. toddlers have perfect posture because they have those huge mothafucking heads and those tiny little bodies. you grow into your body and can no longer keep your head up as easy as you used to. so keep your head up with a long back of the neck and a short front of the neck and stretch it. have you ever been measured against the wall as a kid and stretched your neck to make yourself taller? do that all the time and youll get used to it. all of these things are hard but if u keep at it, they get easy and you dont need to try anymore. its really easy to get lazy though.

do back exercises and watch yourself walk if your at the gym. put yourself in good posture (anyone can do it, its just a matter of how long you can hold it). remember what your doing with your muscles in the mirror and how your holding yourself so you can walk like that outside of the gym and without a mirror and without a pump.

i used to walk like an idiot.

fix your posture and youll not only look more confident, but youll feel more confident. its like smiling, try to smile and get angry about something that you might get a little annoyed by. its a lot harder.

now try walking with confidence and great posture and youll feel better approaching girls because thats one less insecurity taken care of (a large one for many).

Glad i could help and yeah its not gonna fix itself over night, stop being lazy and just do it. your voice will become stronger as well displaying even more confidence.

Working out has help me a lot. Make sure your routine is equally training your back with your pecs. Back exercise will pull those shoulder back as it get stronger.

The other thing is add squat and deadlift to get that lower back to stop slouching.

I tried consciously doing it and failed untill I started getting into fitness.

Ofcourse, if I judge a woman on her posture I have no doubt they do the same.
Ever notice that some women are that much more attractive just by the way she carry herself?
Then you have women that looks good but slouches and to me they go down a scale.

I have developed mine over time just by committing to be aware of it throughout the day. I will catch myself slouching and adjust.

I have heard the Alexander Technique recommended but don't know anything about it. I found some posture exercises in a book or online and it pretty much involved pulling your head up towards the ceiling as if by an invisible string, straightening the spine, and then relaxing and letting your body weight sink down into the floor and your body suspends from your skeleton frame.

I used to stand up once per day and hold a powerful posture for a few minutes (and did some short voice exercises). It was helpful, but for a while now I've just been on auto-monitoring here and there but especially around girls.

just go straight, strain you abdominal muscles and put your shoulders back down, breast wide out front, tilt your chin up and there you go. it´s not only nice with the ladies but really healthy and good for singing :)

Yoga does wonders for poor posture. I took a pilates class last semester, I was one of two guys in that class , but that's not the point. It's also a solid way of improving posture. When you do core make sure you get in some planks and focus on keeping your back straight. Whoever said deadlifts also has a good point, but make sure you do be careful if you're not used to doing them. Those can screw up your back for a long time with improper technique.

you've got the right attitude and ideas. Posture takes time to correct. It's awesome that you're working your upper back and shoulders, just make sure you're doing those exercises more so than chest exercises otherwise you will be right back to square one.

Seated row (squeeze your shoulderblades) is great for strengthening the rhomboids, and rear delt flies are great for pulling the shoulders back

I can't confirm how true this is, but I did use a rowing machine at the gym today for about 20 minutes. With proper technique I felt like my posture was really solid right after I was finished. Not that I regularly slouch, but it felt that much more natural. Maybe it's something worth researching a little? Idk.
