Post subject:  6'0 - 145 lbs. How can I gain weight?

I'm 16 years old, 6 feet tall and weigh around 145 lbs.
I'm not 'incredibly' skinny. My legs and thighs have a lot of muscle on them, but my arms, chest, shoulders, and neck have virtually no fat or muscle at all. Occasionally, I'll try to gain weight and eat a lot of food. It really all goes to my belly, and none of it really reaches the areas that I want to have more muscle mass in (chest, arms, etc).

I really hate being skinny, and I was wondering how I could gain weight, focusing on building up mass in a specific area of my body (like my chest.)

So how can I gain weight?

There's a million of these exact threads so just look around and you'll find good responses.

Be careful to not overwork the chest. Gym rats do it all the time, and sure you'll get nice pecs, but your posture will turn to shit. We sit in chairs all day using those same muscles to hunch over. Be sure to do tons of back exercises (especially rhomboids and rear delts).

Not only do back muscles turn women on, but great posture makes you look bigger and more fit

^ There's no way that routine will put on 10 pounds of muscle.

The only weights you are doing are bicep curls!

Monday
Dumbell Military Press

Dumbell Bench Press

Now you will need to drop weight since your muscles should be weak if you were doing it heavy.
Arnold Press
4 Sets 10 Rep max
Dumbell Flye
4 sets 10 rep max

Wensday
Lat Pull Down
4 sets 10 rep max
Bent over Dumbell Rows
4 sets 10 rep max
Now you will need to drop weight since your muscles should be weak if you were doing it heavy.
Hammer Curls
4 sets 10 rep max

If you up your weight every time you hit your reps you should make gains relatively fast. If your not making gains if your not adding weight then your nutrition is off your not getting sleep or your doing something wrong. Lifting is super easy, you shouldn't have to be in a gym more than 3 hours a week. Nutrition is the everyday struggle.

Found this routine interesting. The guy says don't add to your weight you lift and I was like WTF. There are 17,000 posts in the thread so obviously it's easy to get lost, but basically he was saying for every rep you can do your 1RM increases by 2.5%.

I was skeptical, but a lot of people agree with him on that forum and he has a lot of posts and rep so he probably knows what he's talking about. I'm starting this routine tomorrow.

Post subject:  Eat right

Working out is only going to make you stronger and gain weight if you eat right. And eating a lot has nothing to do with it. Basically to give you a few things to help you try and put on weight, here are a few foods to focus on. Meats, you have to get your protein in. If you want to put on muscle weight, you should be taking about your body weight (in lbs) of grams of protein. So if you weight 160 lbs, you want to eat about 160 grams of protein. Make sure you eat a lot of potatoes, whole wheat bread, pasta, fruit and vegetables. Calories are not bad if they are coming from good foods, so try and up your calorie intake. If you can eat those things on a normal basis, you are going to put on muscle mass, you will feel better, and have more energy. As long as you can stay away from sweets.

Maybe one of the more experienced guys can answer this. Why do some protein supplements offer 100 calories per serving whilst another offers over 1000?

Surely if everyone is after gains then consuming the most calories is the way to go?

Because not everyone who takes protein powders is trying to gain weight. I am taking them because I want to put on muscle mass but still lose body fat, so I get the protein powder with low amounts of calories. If you are trying to put on weight, go with one that has a lot of calories, and try to get whey protein because that will do your body the best.

different reasons , sometimes the protein powders are basically just pure protein and thats what their calorie count adds up to

the supplements that offer 1000 calories have bigger serving sizes also therefore its more product and more calroies if you get me.

for bigger gains more calories is definatley the way to go but you have to make sure you get the right weight gain as some weight gains also increase your body fat.

Oh and if you're considering buying that mutant mass i linked you to, buy the strawberry and banna one as you currently get an extra 1kg of it ( although it doesnt mention this on the website)

don't think because you want to gain weight you should eat everything you see. Find a work out routine you like and stick with that for a few weeks you will get bigger and eat lots of protein like meat, fish, power bars etc.. then after a few weeks switch up your routine so you don't peak.

OP, someone recommended these appetite stimulants by Anabolic Designs called Ravenous. So I bought them thinking I had nothing to lose and after about 5 days of dosage I eat like a horse. Around 3000 calories a day (excluding supplements) and mix that with the gym and good food you'll be gaining weight really quickly. Buy them, they aren't steroids either (the name's misleading).

@zappo, thanks. I want to buy that but I don't want to ship it to Spain from England. Spain are the next Greece and will probably charge me 100 euros in tax to get it sent lol.
