Post subject:  Getting that first career job...

I'm looking for something that's going to take me into a career. My cousin for example works at a bank and she just told me they hire students for the summer but I missed the hiring process this year and have to wait for next semester. In the meantime I am looking for work but specifically I want an entry level job that will take me to the next step. I was looking at a "marketing coordinator" position for example.

Advice?

What do you expect people to do? Make career choices for you?

What do you like? What are you good at? What degree are you going after? Where do you see yourself in five years?

Answer those questions and then search for a job. If you're still young, tell someone you know well to point you in the right direction, not random people online who have no idea who you are.

-I want advice from someone who is making75 to 100 k a year.

- I like advertising. I've done Marketing (well telecommunications to be exact) but would like to take on more responsibilities such as Public Relations. I need to know how to make headway though.

- I am talking to people IRL but I would also like to know other people's thoughts. I don't want it all coming from one place.

Funny, I'm a creative director and have worked as an art producer and copywriter.

I can tell you that if you want to jump start your career in advertising, you have to be a go-getter.

Write a resume, cover letter, and start working on a portfolio. Most career centers will tell you to not contact employers directly. Getting into advertising is one of toughest tasks out there on the job market, so you have to show that you want it. Most agencies aren't formal nowadays, which means if they see you have talent, they won't be afraid to consider you. Career centers will tell you that advertising agencies want to see at least a 3.4, but that's not necessary. You don't need to even put your GPA on your resume.

Once you have everything prepared, find advertising agencies in your area. If they have an internship available, apply for it. If they don't, contact them directly with your information, asking them for an internship. Start networking- find if your city has an advertising federation. If you live in a large city, they probably do. They will throw conferences and events regarding advertising- go to those. They will typically be $30-40 to attend if you're not a member. To go around this, contact the event coordinator and tell them your situation, that you're a college student, and you want to attend. Tell them you're willing to work at the event in order to do this. The advertising communities are well-knit, and you want to somehow get your foot in the door to at least be recognized. Just seeing your face at an event will already associate you with advertising.
To get into the industry, you need desire and contacts. It takes a lot of work. The programs at 72andSunny and WK, where you pay over $10,000 for a year of learning, is very selective. It's a great opportunity, but you have about 10-15 spots for thousands of applicants.

The full-service agencies will also have PR departments, but you can also check out communication firms.

That is good you found something you like to do. A lot of jobs nowadays like you to have an education and work experience to back your dream career job. I remember there was a Bachelors degree at my university called Business Administration with an Emphasis in Marketing. The community college I went to also offers courses in marketing and public relations.

I was taught that education and hard work are key to moving up the ladder towards that $75k to $100k a year job. I'm not quite there myself, but I suggest combining a good education and working jobs that can springboard you to your dream career. A good book to look at that has been around for years and they keep rewriting it to be current each year is called "What Color is Your Parachute?" by Richard Bolles. I found this to be a great tool/book for learning more about what I want to be when I get older...
