In every story, there's a person who seems to know everyone. He seems to know the right people for any given situation and those people seem to owe him a few favors - or at the very least be more than happy to help. Perhaps that vision is a little bit idealistic, but it sums it up, I think. But how would I get there? I've read 'How to win friends and influence people,' and I found it useful, but a second opinion on how I could proceed would help immensely. Now, the main problem is that I think that I'm a little late to the scene. I did not have a 'best friend' or such when I was a child or my teenage years due to dear old smothering mumsy. My social circle consisted of the members of work groups and such - and I did not make any lasting relationship. Now, at 22 I understand the importance of networking and while I do not think I am too late, I am late. How can I boost the effectiveness of this? |

I don't think you can ever be to old to be networking...I'm sure there are 80 year olds networking somewhere as we speak. I guess the next step is to go where the people are. Do you have any hobbies that ave a social aspect? E.g. If you play guitar go to an open mic or if you like cooking take a cooking class There is a guy called Juggler, real name Wayne Elise whose teaching really helped me become a much better socializer. Search on youtube for "seduction school" and you'll find a show he made for a tv channel in the UK which is a good place to start. |

As far as I know you are definitely not late at all for starting at your age, for me on the other hand, you'll consider me too young (15) |

No way man! At 15 you have a lifetime of networking ahead of you! And now you can even get a head start on the people who are going to only start networking at college or even after that! Kyzn man, if I was 15 again I would get involved in everything! |

Late? 22? Dude get real. Networking is easy. Be friendly to everyone you meet, help them if they need it but don't be a push over and don't let them use you. To really swing people you've got to tell them what they want to hear at times. I don't mean lie to them but sometimes you have to explain why you're doing things to people to keep them on your sweet side. And keep in touch with them! A few phone calls every now and then goes a long way. Basically, networks are friends or people who aren't friends but are more than acquaintances. And you gotta keep them sweet, whereas with friends and girls you don't have to. |

Roughly a month in, here are the changes I have implemented in my networking. Joined facebook. Joined school clubs. Just talked with anyone in general - lab partners and such. But how do I tell who is potentially useful and who isn't? And do you gave any advice on how to appear to be useful as well? |

Let me tell you, everyone is potentially useful! Do not underestimate anyone. There are a lot of great people out there and you never really know who they are at first or who they can become. Also with gaining social acceptance, everyone has an opinion and the more people who have a good opinion of you the better off you are.
