Post subject:  Want to live on my own

First off, I'm 21 years old.

Don't get me wrong, my parents are great people. I got arrested for something extremely bad and they still allowed me to live in their house(I was 18 at the time). When I wrecked my car they bought me a nice one for around 14 grand. They are also paying for my college.

However, we are so different and they will never understand the type of life I wish to lead. I currently work at a job where I get no pay(I work completely off of tips) and can work as much as I desire. I work a ton but it is because there are things I want to buy so I am motivated. My parents want me to save my money(I already have 10 grand in my bank account, and a few thousand in stocks). I haven't saved any money in well over a year, maybe 2, but I feel money should be used to help you acquire things to enhance your life and make you happy.

My parents have over a million dollars saved up yet they never do anything for themselves. What's taking out a hundred grand to go on MANY vacations??? They will still have plenty left over and deserve it.

My mom has never drank and only smoked once. My dad doesnt drink anymore. I'm all about having fun and doing this as long as you can control yourself. Moreover, I want to take the college experience slowly and enjoy it. My young years I'll never get back and I want to make the most of it. Once I get a career I'll be working hard the rest of my life and I'm not eager to start it. I have a feeling my parents want me to just get college over with and start making money ASAP.

---

Ok, here's the problem..because I was arrested I have a misdemeanor and it severely hampers my ability to get a job, especially in this economy. The job I have is adequate if you work hard, but with no set income it would be very hard to live off of(not something I'm willing to do). I will also only be able to have it for about a year and a half more. I'm also not willing to dip into my bank account to live off of that either.

Sorry, I just needed to vent this out. I'm extremely frustrated at my situation right now. Hopefully there's someone who can give me advice.

Also, can anyone tell me what living on your own is like??(apartmentwise) Like things you will have to do, expenses and whatnot. I want to be as prepared for this as possible, just in case I do find a solid job and can move out.

First off Renting sucks you give money every month and by the end you have nothing to show for it. A house or a condo you have that its yours and you sell it when you move. So you should save money and buy a house or a condo if you rent you have less to save and you never get a house.

I laughed at your venting cause seriously. There are 42 million people in the US living under the poverty level. I am 24 and owned 3 cars all I worked for payed myself. I dropped out of college cause I couldn't pay for it and couldn't get loans. So your parents buying you a car lol cry me a river.

Sounds like your parents are smart and know about money, seems like they spoiled you and gave you a sense of entitlement. How about you ask your father to teach you how to make money, and move out.

Ok here is one more thing renting.

I had an apartment.

800 a month. thats 200 a week
I spent about 150 on food a week
I had my phone bill 100 month so 25 a week
cable/internet 100 month 25 a week
then you have elicticity which was hell of cheap 60 a month
then car inssurance and gas for my car a month.

In the end just to live and get to work your spending $500+ a week.

Now add going out drinking, clothes, gym membership, dates, and anything extra you do for fun.

Your 10k in your bank will be gone in less than a year.

Yes, most people are below the poverty line. I should've taken that into consideration. Far from a spoiled brat, though.

I work very hard for the things I have. All of that $10,000 I made myself, and once I get a career that makes good money I intend on paying my parents back for everything including all my court shit, my car and my college. I put everything I want to buy for myself in a notepad, and from there I determine how many days it'll take me to make that money. Since I work at a job where I can work as much as I want, I've often worked 6-7 days a week 10+ hours a day to make the money I need to buy the things I want. I've done this for the last two years, and because of it my life has become that much nicer.

Everyone else recognizes this but my parents. All they ever do is criticize, and don't understand this. Everything I've bought is nice shit, things I'll have for the rest of my life assuming they're not stolen or burn in a house fire. Instead of hanging out with friends and partying this summer, I spent it working nonstop saving up several thousand dollars because there were things I wanted to buy. So I worked my ass off and bought everything.

I've worked hard and finally like where I'm at in life. Now I just want to enjoy it and the college experience. My parents just want me to hurry up with college, take as many classes as possible and start a career. There's no point in having that much money if you don't enjoy yourself. That's why when I get a job with an actual salary I want to move out.

Thanks for the weekly amounts too.
