Post subject:  Advanced Body Language Q - Who can answer?

If you're going to answer this question I'm going to assume you already know what a micro expression is. My question is when I'm talking with a girl, sometimes I'll say or do something and her eyes will open very wide, exposing the whites of her eyes both above and below the pupil. It seems at times I've said something very impressive, other times I've said something which may cause concern for the girl. I don't quite understand if this is a good indication from the girl or a negative. Have I touched on touchy subject for her? Or is she impressed? Perhaps this micro expression response could be either way and simply needs to be interpreted in the scenario, but I can't seem to always read which one she's feeling when I first begin to talk to a new target. Thanks guys!

What your spotting is likely surprise, surprise can be good or bad. It isn't recognized as emotion but it is recognized as a facial expression and a reaction. Surprise and fear are very similar though so I could be wrong that your are seeing fear(which may be true in some cases but not others). Pay more attention to the eye brows and cheek muscles to look for "smiling eyes", raised brows(arched up smoothly) is a good thing unless they are scrunched. If a girl dislikes a comment or hates it she will often times show a facial expression of disgust. Some girls that have a temperament may react with anger at your comments. Personality plays a big factor in how they react, in general there is joy as positive, anything else is negative(not necessarily about you but some part of the statement). If a girl reacts negatively it may simply be about some part of the statement, if meat was mentioned they maybe a vegetarian or vegan, if an animal was mentioned they may show fear, etc.

I can often times say what someone is thinking or how they feel about something based on their facial reaction and body language so I can shift a conversation swiftly away from that topic. Quite a tool when your talking to someone, to know what to avoid, plus it shows you are paying close attention to them and no one else and people love personal attention.

A rule in reading body language is supposed to be read the body language in chunks, isn't it?

1 gesture can mean a lot of things. But when its combined with other gestures that happen at the same time it limits the possibilities.

Microgestures(normally pacifiers) and microexpressions are an exception to the rule because they are involuntary, once you have a large understanding of body language then you start picking up on the things no one notices. Example of Microgestures: When someone touches their ear at the same time, or when someone rubs the back of their neck. They are showing their discomfort with something that just happened(it may even be something they thought about).

Microexpressions are very special and have a direct link to the brain, often times you can name an emotion before someone even realizes they feel it. Microexpressions show up everywhere if you know what you are looking for, but they are often so short that only people trained in microexpressions will pick them up. There is the occasional natural that has the instincts to read them but more often then not it requires training.

The lesson is Microgestures and Microexpressions are involuntary reactions, it takes a great understanding of body language to get to that point but they are quite trustworthy when you align it with timing.

When it comes to a lot of things yes chunks make it more reliable, but when it comes to reading statements within statements, or reading moments of emotions the most reliable thing is microexpressions and microgestures.

Hmm.. I thought microgestures (Cool to have a name for it) was pretty obvious.
It really does sound how Poeticlyskuac says, I'd take it as suprise and try and work the reason from trying to pick up on other involuntary movements.

Maybe rather than trying to work out what that gesture means, use it as a signal to pick up on any oncoming gestures.

Microgestures was made up by Joe Navarro, not sure if it has got scientifically dubbed, Microexpressions are scientifically dubbed by Paul Ekman(the guy Tim Roth plays in Lie to Me is based on him).

Yeah, well everything has meaning that is the crazy part. You don't think so at first but then you realize how everything seems to have a meaning. Our emotions become more and more transparent, when you realize what emotion they are having you can analyze how they feel. When you know how someone feels you can get to a point where you can read thoughts pretty often based on what happened.

A good example is a little girl came in my work, I could tell she was texting a guy she had a crush on, then I knew she was lying about her crush when she touched her ear during a statement. During the whole interaction I knew what she was thinking based of the timing of her microgestures, her facial cues, and voice.

lolaskate,
Yeah it's taken me a long time to get to the point where I am, and I still want to go further. On the other hand I'm still usually a nightmare at a poker table if I try to read body language. I watch TV and am distraught when I watch some players make ridiculous calls. If Poker is a war of information then body language is the faucet on tap and should be treated as such. If you can read people really well all you have to do is ask questions out loud and their body language will tell you what they have.

Love body language, it makes life so much easier. You can pick up on girls so much easier when you notice all of her lil quirks. I've talked to girls about guys that hit on them, made a few body language observations I seen(realizing they weren't impressed), I had them attracted to me after just a few comments with some confidence. Hell of a tool.
