I wanna introduce you guys to a new phrase I discovered recently. I was working with my producers in London on some tracks and we were doing vocals. We'd just stopped for a break. On my demo version of the tracks, there had been some of what I can only describe as 'personality conveying ad libbing'. Laughs, and percussive sounds and stuff. I asked my producer if he thought we should introduce them. He said: "In my very, very humble opinion, I think that sort of thing cheapens the music." I said okay, and we never recorded the parts. I didn't feel offended or affronted, at all. I felt good about it, even. I realised, it's because of this phrase: In my very, very humble opinion. How is this gonna help you? Well... It means you can get away with ANYTHING. I'm serious, try it. Before making an absurd, outlandish or even offensive statement, clip that on the front end of it. In my very, very humble opinion, I think... It can essentially be described as a softener. Anything you say will be softened and therefore easier to take in; it actually alleviates you from the responsibility of delivering the statement almost entirely. It demonstrates profound social intelligence and confidence; professionalism, even. It shows apathy and warmth, without seeming needy. It's businesslike; intelligent. Try it out, it's wicked. I love it. That's a very powerful line. You can do anything with that phrase: compliment, tease, start a new subject. Thanks for the words of wisdom appreciate it. |
