| Post subject: | "You have an accent!" |
To put it in a nutshell, my parents are british and scaninavian, I grew up in mostly California but also in England and northern europe, therefore my accent is fucked up! I speak with an almost flawless american accent but there is something there..something that comes up when I use certain words.. something that reveals my background But since my accent is so mixed due to my childhood I can't just say, "yeah I have a bit of german in me" I mean I could but it would be far from the truth... My accent is a mix of everything! "You have an accent!" I have experimented endlessly to respones to this statement/question, girls and guys ask it to me. I have come up with some really good responses but so far I haven't found one that always work. Here are some of my successful responses to "You have an accent!" "Yes I bought it on e-bay" "Yes I do" (and move on with the convo) "No I don't" (and move on..) "Are you jealous?" "I also have a boner but you are not commenting on that" "Ah fuck and all those money I spend on english classes are wasted" "Yes but I have good qualities too" "Yes, whats with the interview? do you want to hear my lifes story?" (usually end up telling them most of it) "and you are cute" "and you *insert neg*" (like: yeah and you buy your clothes in a novelty shop) Like I said, I have experimented with a response to this for like infinity! But I haven't found a universal response that works all the time.. now Im going bar-hopping tomorrow so if anyone has any ideas that would be great! |

Hey mate, i believe the fact that you have an accent makes you only more interesting and you should be proud of ur background, you've experienced different cultures. If there are people who would judge you , well they have really limited views. Moreover, from a linguistic perspective there are no people who are accent free. I live in Austria and people always comment on my accent. My response to them is a huge smile and a line like a simple ' Thank you ' , 'Oh yea? I can teach you if you want' or 'Seriously, i've never realized it'. People are usually attracted to the things that are different in some way, so i actually enjoy my accent a lot (in English or in German, doesnt matter:). Cheers Jez |
