i think in these instances, a "thoughtful" gift is always a sure-fire winner.

ask your girlfriend what her mother likes (what she is into...hobbies? passions? etc?)

same goes for her father...

then get them both a gift (doesn't have to be expensive) that relates to what they really like in life.

it could be gardening, it could be teaching, it could be running/jogging/exercising...

the point is, your gift will be thoughtful and will show consideration for her parents, which will really impress them and make them very pleased to know that their daughter has shared details about them with you!

if he likes golf, you could get him a golf mug

if she likes gardening, you could get her something to go in the garden

just a thought.....

btw, i also think your idea was a good one. especially the follow-up line, lol.

How are ya guys? After being in a relationship for nearly 3 months the time to meet her parents has come. Based on stories about her parents I heard, they are very traditional and somewhat "scary" as I was told. From what my girlfriend told me they like me for how i treat her and respect her, shes very close to them so they talk a lot about everything. Was thinking about breaking the first ice by bringing a flower for her mom and a baby bottle of whiskey/wine for her dad and following it up with "thats what they do in movies". How did u guys sort that out? How do u usually act around ur girlfriends parents? Any hints, tips and clues would be greatly appreciated. Oh and this might be useful. Its not a dinner or anything that Im invited to, that days theres a football/soccer game on. Her entire family supports the team which is playing against my favorite team. Dont really know how to use that to my advantage or if it even gives me any form of advantage at all but just thought Id let you know. Cheers!

I've never been good with gifts. Instead I help out around the house. My GF has 4 sisters and a little brother so her dad is glad to have another male around the house who can help do "man stuff". I treat them like I would my own family, so I act respectful and watch my language. Dont suck up or try to impress them, just be yourself. I've been through the "parents not liking you" thing that lasted 1 weekend camping trip and then they changed their minds. I think because my GF's ex was in the Army and I'm in the Army, they assumed I'd treat her the same way as her ex. Once they realised I wasnt the same, they welcomed me with open arms. Even met half the extended family

Its funny how it went tho, never got to use that line as i broke the bottle of wine just at the door step. Couldnt have wished for a better ice breaker as it got them smiling and laughing for the entire evening. Guess it was all about the gesture rly!
