I'm getting into a regular thing with a cute girl, but there's one problem rearing it's head before there's even talk of a relationship: she's not on birth control pills and I don't like condoms. On the one hand, it's her body so nobody can really tell her to take pills. On the other, I know of no scientifically supported health reason not to take them. She tried them once but had a bad experience. Even so, I happen to know that this is quite common and can be fixed by using a different brand or dosage, whatever the doctor recommends. I'm thinking her resistance is not health related, but related to an aversion to being dependent on pills for anything.

So is it ethical to try to convince her to take pills yes or no? And if yes, how is the best way to go about it?

You posted this in the relationship page. Because of that, there is no ethical reason one can't or shouldn't talk with his girl about birth control or express your desires on this subject.

Likewise, you should be willing to discuss her desire for you to get a vasectomy.

If you're just gaming a girl to get laid, no, this isn't ethical, but if you're in a relationship, it's just one of a lot of things I think that you end up talking about sooner or later.

Until you can convince her , just bite the bullet and put on the rain coat.
It's better than the alternatives.

This is a bit contradictory. Birth Control can be VERY unpleasant for woman if they have side effects. Furthermore, these side effects can take a very long time to correct themselves (up to a year, depending on the type of BC), even after they stop taking it. One of the more common effects is a loss of sex drive! One type of birth control, the IUD, can leave woman infertile if it's not properly installed (1 in 1000 or something like that). It's something your girlfriend should talk over with her doctor, but ultimately it's her decision. I do not believe it is ethical to push it on her.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your replies guys. I didn't realize birth control pills could be so unpleasant for women. I guess I'm just kind of spoiled since the women in my country are usually on it (the girl I'm dating is foreign). We talked about contraception a bit, and she did confirm my intuition that she doesn't like to depend on pills. I've decided I won't push it now, but I'll reopen the discussion should we stay together for a longer time. Who knows, maybe she's willing to give it another try if we become are a proper couple.

agreed...you wouldn't want to cause her health issues. If it's a LTR you could express your desires, but pushing her to do that is a bad idea imho.
