Post subject:  How to approach NLP books

So I've just started reading "Introduction to NLP" by by Joseph Oconner (or something of that sort).
And I've wondered how to approach reading this book.
Is it one of those subjects that a person should learn like a college course? Read every page as if it's a college text book to memorize it all?
Or should this be more of a casual read, just like reading any other book.

nlp is based on principles, if you learn the principles behind nlp you don't need to remember things word for word ;)
