| Post subject: | female journalist looking for male opinions about catcalling |
Hey guys, sorry to join your forum as a woman, but I'm looking for male opinions on street harassment. I'm a female journalist writing an article about catcalling, whistling at women, calling out to women in public, etc. I know that is not technically a PUA activity, but I've had an extremely hard time finding a guy to talk to who will admit to ever calling out to a woman in public. I need a quote for my article from the male perspective. And my article is due in two days. I have plenty of male contacts, but either they've never approached/called out to a woman on the street like this, or they won't admit it. I already talked to plenty of women (and men) who think catcalling is horrible, disrespectful, and scary. But I know from internet articles that a lot of men think it's no big deal or think women should be okay with it. Since there are no public groups for what I'm looking for, I thought a PUA forum might be my best bet. If you would be willing to answer a few questions on the phone or via email, please write to me at cityofroses (at) gmail. I'm actually interested in a different perspective so everyone in my article isn't saying the same thing, so I'd really appreciate it if someone could write to me. This is a totally serious request. Here's a definition of what "street harassment" is referring to: "3. Least severe: a) staring, b) whistling, c) all other comments men make to women that are unnecessary. 2. Moderately severe: a) sexual innuendoes, b) references to a woman’s gender or body that are not sexually explicit. 1. Severe: a) sexually explicit reference to a woman’s body or to sexual activities, b) profanities that are directed at a woman, c) physical acts such as following a woman, throwing things at her, or pinching or poking her." Thanks, Becky |

I always thought it was a pretty chicken shit thing to do. In all the street approaches I've done I've never got a reaction that suggested the woman felt harassed by it. Shouting something stupid at a woman walking past, to me, is just a sign of a dickhead. Staring I'd never really thought of as "harassment" but I guess it probably feels very intimidating. I'm pretty sure most guys on here will have trained out the urge to stare. Pick up often gets a very misogynistic reputation but when you look at how a lot of arseholes behave then you start seeing that a big part of it is providing a better experience for the woman too. Men will always want to have sex with women (and vice versa), if you can do it without being an arsehole in the process then surely that benefits everyone? |

I don't think you'll really find a lot of that in pickup, OP -- there just isn't a lot of overt cat-calling or whistling or techniques even close to that. Mainly because it doesn't work (at least I can't imagine it does), and pickup is results-oriented. The closest thing to "degrading" a girl that some PUAs will resort to is a 'neg'... which is like a small, backhanded insult-like compliment (are you a hand model? things like that...) - but it's not like those are yelled from the street or used to publicly humiliate anyone. Those are sometimes thrown around to take a girl down a notch... and normally done in a playful way... These days a lot of PUAs aren't even using negs anymore. Now of course not all PUAs are like this. Browse the forum and you'll find a lot of...... "interesting" characters with interesting problems who have dealt with them in some very......... unconventional (and not really recommended) ways... PM me if you'd like to talk further. |

You notice guys never catcall when they're on their own? It's more of a dominance sign of their manliness to other members of their group. A PUA would say "Hi, I need a female opinion on something" then woo her if she was interested. |

Catcalling is something most of the members of this forum wouldn't even think of doing, as we know of the negative connotations behind such an act. I often dub it among my rules for being a PUA, along with others such as "No need to attack other people indirectly to raise my value (Making fun of their friend, etc.), or ones that just completely ban me from seeking crazy women regardless of their value. I've never experienced or seen catcalling in my life (Living in a sheltered, upper-class neighborhood so that might be a cause for such), so I cannot comment on the second part of your post. |

While we are talking about this... Have you guys ever been on the other end of this scenario? For example, a group of older women making sexual remarks to you as you walk by? I remember vividly one time at work a group of ladies would make sexual innuendoes every time I walked by, calling me dirty names, ect. One even grabbed my butt! |
